Above are some photos from World Read Aloud Day! We began by SKYPING with Alan Katz, a funny author/poet/songwriter. He was great! Then students separated into various groups to read with community members. We were celebrating reading and books! Students each received a free book and a Great Escape reading log on Friday before break. In order to receive free passes they need to read for 6 hours (or be read to) and return their reading log by Wednesday of this week. If they lost their log they can list their books and times on any sheet of paper.
Students SKYPED with a park ranger from Denali National Park in Alaska. We will begin our nonfiction inquiry unit related to national parks next week. However, Denali could only Skype with us last week and I didn't want to miss out on such a neat opportunity. So, we jumped ahead a bit and learned a lot about Denali! Did you know they have the only national sled dog team? It is one of the easier ways to get around since the enormous park has only one road bisecting it in half!
Above are photos from the first Invention Convention! Amy Clapp has always had students participate in a national invention competition, finding possible solutions to problems that exist in the world. They work together in teams to create a new product. They research the history of possible connections and design mock web pages as well as write reports describing their invention. This year she was excited to find a way for students to share their ideas and hard work with their peers and families. I bet she will do it again next year, so if you happened to miss it don't worry! I bet you will be able to check out next year's inventions!

Student Led Conferences:
This week, your child will have a form with suggested times for student led conferences. This is your child's chance to show you work that he/she is proud of from the school year and set goals for the remainder of the year. I will be available for conferences from 2:30 to 3:00 on most afternoons. I will also be setting up conferences for the afternoon and evening of March 16th and March 21. Please fill out the form with your top time choices and I will get back to you with the exact date and time for the conference. It is very important that your child attend this conferences, since she/he will be running it!
