I am looking for Mystery Readers to share their love of reading with us this year. I am excited to invite adult readers into our classroom to read aloud a short story, picture book or excerpt from a favorite book any afternoon from now until June. If you would like to surprise a student by coming to read to us, we’d love to have you! Here’s the scoop on becoming a Mystery Reader:
WHO can be a Mystery Reader?
Parents, grandparents, relatives, or other special people may volunteer to read a story to our class. The goal is to remain a “mystery” so that even your own learner is surprised to learn who the Mystery Reader will be!
WHAT does a Mystery Reader do?
Mystery Readers are welcome to choose any age appropriate book to read to our class. You may bring a book from home, or if you would like to borrow one from school, you are welcome to do so. Some readers select favorite stories from childhood, some bring props, dress like a character, or even bring a snack related to the story. It is also fabulous to just come as yourself and to continue reading from our current classroom read aloud. No matter what you choose to do, we are sure we will enjoy spending time with you!
WHEN can I come read?
Mystery Readers are invited to come any afternoon for about 20 minutes. It works best to have our guests around 12:35 (right after lunch) or around 2:00 (the last part of our day). However, it is possible to come at other times. I do need to know in advance when you are hoping to come!
HOW can I sign up to be a Mystery Reader?
I will be sending home information and a sign-up sheet within the first few weeks of school. You can fill that out or just get in touch with me via email, phone or in person. We can set up a date and time and touch base about your plans.
WHY IS IT CALLED MYSTERY READER?
When you sign up we try as hard as possible to keep it a secret from your learner! When you check in with Donna at the desk she will call me to let me know you are here. We will then guess who it could be using the three simple clues you have previously given me (I work at the library, I have 3 sons at this school, I love to run, etc.). Students guess who it could be and then I will send your learner down to Donna's desk to escort you to our room!
It really is great fun and students look forward to our Mystery Reader throughout the day!
We do this all year, so if a grandparent visits in March or you love a certain spring time book be sure to plan a visit with that time of year!
Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments about this activity!
Thanks,
Bethany
