Hello!
The first few days sure did fly by. We have enjoyed getting to know each other, the new routines and expectations. We began all of our classes this week except for music. Students will have music class with Ms. K on Tuesday when we return from the long weekend. I have added some photos from the first few days below! (Please send in your photograph/blog form so that I can include your learner!)

First Day of School Photos!
We had some fun with balloons right off that bat! Inside each balloon was a strip of paper describing something students could expect in the coming school year. There are only a few pictures; some students were fast poppers!
READING:
Students explored the classroom library and tried out a few books this week as well. We even had a book tasting! Students "tasted" a few different books while completing a menu about them. The goal is to choose a "Just Right Book"! We also began reading The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine Paterson. It is about a feisty foster kid's outrageous scheme to be reunited with her birth mother has unintended consequences in The Great Gilly Hopkins, an entertaining film for the entire family.
MATH:
Students began math with a Baseline Assessment and dove into some of the Number Corner activities, including Calendar Grid and Calendar Collector. We will begin our math investigations this week.

HOMEWORK:
This week students will be assigned homework. Students should expect to have two math assignments each week, one due Wednesday and one due Friday. All homework will be sent home on Mondays and can be turned in early. Students are also expected to be reading nightly for 20-25 minutes. A reading log will be checked on Fridays. I look forward to beginning homework in this way and checking in with families at our first conference in October to ensure it is working for everyone.
I have really enjoyed this first week. Students seem excited to see old friends and make some new ones as well. I think we are off to a fantastic start! Feel free to email me with any comments or questions at any time.
Thanks for taking the time to read about our first week!
