Hello!
Literacy
Last week students worked hard to complete personal narrative drafts as well as their first free choice book. This week we will begin book groups and discuss books and reading strategies. We also completed The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine Paterson. You should definitely ask your learner about the book, the room was very enthusiastic about it on Friday! It has been adapted to film and will be released October 7, 2016. I bet many of your learners would enjoy seeing it!
4th Grade Math
Students explored prime and composite numbers. Ask your learner to tell you what each is! (Prime Numbers have just two factors; 1 and itself. Composite Numbers have more than 2 factors.) The slideshow below shows a project they worked on together:

Fifth Grade Math:
Fifth graders worked with volume this week. They found all the possible expressions they could when there was a volume of 24. They worked with partners and built the boxes, recording the length, width, and height. You may have also noticed they had to write numerical expressions for some sentences. This is harder than it sounds and looks! We really try to break the sentence apart and even color coded the expressions to match up the various parts. These multi-step problems need to be read carefully! Here are some pictures of the 5th graders during math class:

4th Graders are 1st Grade Big Buddies!
5th Graders will meet their new buddies this week so stay tuned for some photos next post! Fifth graders also will be heading to STARBASE once again this Thursday.
Homework continues to be due on Wednesday and Fridays and students have assigned readings this week with the beginning of book clubs. Reading should take about 20-25 minutes. If their reading assignments seem to be taking longer than that please let me know so that I can adjust the assignment accordingly.
Open House is on Septemebr 29. Ms. Canales will hold a brief meeting about the International Baccalaureate program, an instructional framework that teachers and administrators have been investigating as a possible good fit for our district. That begins at 5:30 and Open House will follow from 6:00-7:00. We hope to see you there!
Have a great week!
