Last week sure was busy with our first meeting regarding Shakespeare, an early release day, the ACSU Spelling Bee, 4th grade apple picking, 5th grade to STARBASE AND the other typical day to day things!
4/5 Literacy
Last week in literacy we enjoyed learning about Romeo and Juliet with 4 actors and actresses from Town Hall Theater. We also cheered on our Salisbury Spelling Bee Team which included two fifth graders, Elliot and Zoey. The Spelling Bee team worked hard and placed third, just one word out of 2nd place and just another word out of third place! We finished Among the Hidden, our read aloud and began Silverwing. Our first round of book groups concluded and another will begin this week. During this next round of groups students will mix with Ms. Foster's third grade class. Students will have two books for the next few weeks; one for home reading and one for school reading. They will be responsible for a book project about their home reading book. The project will be explained early this week to students and they will have time in class to work on it. We will continue to write narratives and work with our new vocabulary words: bail, impetuous, cubicle, dilemma, .
4th Grade Math
Students began a new unit. The unit overview is here: www.mathlearningcenter.org/sites/default/files/documents/family/PAR-BR4-U2.pdf
If Bridges math is new to you or your oldest child is currently learning these strategies please check out the overview. The strategies and vocabulary included will help you to know how to best support your fourth grader! There were some pictures above of students learning HOW double-digit multiplication works and WHY it works when we do it "our way". They are using the partial product strategy and showing it with the area model. We will learn the standard algorithm later in the year.
5th Grade Math
Fifth graders took an end unit assessment this week and will begin Unit 2 this week. The unit overview is here:
www.mathlearningcenter.org/sites/default/files/documents/family/PAR-BR5-U2.pdf
We will be working with fractions this week and will work towards adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators efficiently by the end of the unit.
